LaCie, the premium brand of Seagate Technology, announced on Tuesday the addition of USB-C technology to its Porsche Design Mobile Drive. Besides being compatible with Apple’s implementation of USB-C on the new MacBook without the need for adapters, this new technology makes the LaCie Mobile Drive easy to connect, since both ends of the cable are identical, and the connector is reversible. The change also takes advantage of USB 3.1’s ability to transfer up to 10Gbps bi-directionally, a doubling of the capability of USB 3.0.
The LaCie Mobile Drive delivers up to 100 MB/s. Additionally, the drive features an enclosure made from 3mm-thick solid aluminum. The LaCie Mobile Drive was designed especially for Mac users, and uses the same aluminum finish as the latest MacBook. The included adapter cable makes it compatible with standard USB 3.0 (Type-A) or USB 2.0 ports.
The new LaCie Mobile Drive will be available next quarter in 500 GB (slim size), 1 TB and 2 TB capacities through the LaCie Online Store and LaCie Resellers. Pricing is not yet available.
