LG has unveiled the LW980S, a 3D TV which incorporates LG’s Nano Full Backlit LEDs with its Cinema 3D display technology to provide what the company claims will be an improved 3D viewing experience. The LW980S uses passive, non-powered 3D glasses to create the 3D effects and consequently gets away with lightweight and comparatively cheap 3D glasses.

LG’s nano technology prints extremely small LED dots on a thin film. The Korean company claims his technique disperses light more evenly across the screen creating brighter, clearer and smoother images. LG pairs this with a 400Hz refresh rate.

The TV also supports the usual Smart TV functions, including 3D video streaming and content sharing. Several apps that can be downloaded from a dedicated LG website. These include Smart Share, an app that enables sharing content between the TV, mobile phones and other digital devices.

LG will be showcasing the LW980S as the upcoming IFA Berlin consumer electronics show kicking off on September 2. The company has not released any details on size, pricing or availability, though 47- and 55-inch sizes have been hinted at in promo material.
