Capcom announced it will release a sequel based on the action series Lost Planet in 2013.
Lost Planet 3 will focus on a rig pilot named Jim, who leaves Earth to accept a contract to work on the planet E.D.N. III.
As with the previous two titles, players will follow the quest for a precious resource called thermal energy. Jim will work for the corporation NEVEC as they prepare the planet for colonization. Also fighting to preserve thermal energy is the Akrid, the planet’s species of bug-like creatures.
Capcom says Lost Planet 3 will feature a combination of first-person battles with the traditional third-person gunplay from previous titles. The third title will also return to its roots by bringing back the snowy landscapes that dominated the original game.
The first Lost Planet was an interesting first endeavor for Capcom. Players plodded through the snow, using grappling hooks to quickly traverse environments. Akrid were killed by shooting at glowing orange parts of their body with traditional weapons and mechanized assault vehicles.
The sequel, Lost Planet 2, was largely similar but placed a greater emphasis on cooperative play.
Lost Planet 3 will be available for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
