Actress Mary Steenburgen is reportedly joining the cast of Orange is the New Black next season. Steenburgen announced via Twitter on Thursday that she was “very excited” to go to her first wardrobe fitting for the comedy-drama about a group of women in an all-women’s prison. The show is currently in production for its third season.
Netflix renewed Orange is the New Black for a 13-episode third season in May, and it premiered season two in its entirety on 6 June. The cult prison drama is based on a memoir written by Piper Kerman about her experiences serving time on the inside. It’s set in a fictional prison in Litchfield, New York.
Kerman told the Guardian: “I thought that if I was successful at what I wanted to achieve … then people would come away from the book thinking differently about who was in prison and why they were there, and what really happens in there.”
Steenburgen won an Oscar and Golden Globe for her role in Jonathan Demme’s 1980 film Melvin and Howard. She appeared recently on the television show Justified.
