BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka says the development team behind role-playing epic Mass Effect 3 is “hard at work” on how to appease video game players upset over the game’s controversial ending.
Muzyka made the remarks in a post on the official BioWare blog Wednesday.
“We’re working hard to maintain the right balance between the artistic integrity of the original story while addressing the fan feedback we’ve received,” says Muzyka in the post. “This is in addition to our existing plan to continue providing new Mass Effect content and new full games, so rest assured that your journey in the Mass Effect universe can, and will, continue.
Muzyka says developers are looking into content plans that should offer “more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey.” It’s not clear whether that means video game players will get a completely different ending or if it fills the blanks on other secondary storylines.
Muzyka — who also serves as General Manager of BioWare — says while he supports the artistic choices made by Mass Effect 3 developers, the studio is listening closely to reader reactions.
“It’s incredibly painful to receive feedback from our core fans that the game’s endings were not up to their expectations. Our first instinct is to defend our work and point to the high ratings offered by critics — but out of respect to our fans, we need to accept the criticism and feedback with humility,” Muzyka says.
Mass Effect 3 stars Commander Shepard as he leads an intergalactic war against the Reapers, an alien machine race that resurfaces every 50,000 years to wipe out organic life.
Scores of fans expressed outrage over the game’s conclusion, launching social media campaigns in hopes of receiving a better ending.
Earlier this week, BioWare said through Facebook they have “ruled nothing out” when it comes how they plan to respond to player complaints.
