MetroPCS Details Transition to VoIP Over LTE for 2012

MetroPCS has confirmed plans to transition to voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) communications early next year. During a conference call that focused on recent earnings, chief executive Roger Linquist suggested the company is already deploying technology that will be necessary to jump from a circuit-switched voice system to the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology.

“We are planning to begin introducing VoLTE-capable handsets early next year to move voice as well as data traffic to our LTE network,” Linquist said, as quoted by Connected Planet.

The executive claims VoLTE technology will enable the network to further optimize usage of limited spectrum available for voice and data. The company is also said to be considering other ways to add more spectrum, such as strategic acquisitions.

MetroPCS expects to deploy LTE service across the company’s entire CDMA footprint ahead of the VoLTE transition.
