Following up an announcement it made last month, Microsoft today made an updated version of the Windows 10 technical preview available to a much wider range of Lumia smartphones.
Microsoft delivered an early build of the technical preview to just a few handsets in February. However, due to the way most handsets’ partitions were created, the preview couldn’t function properly on the vast majority of devices. Microsoft has completed a process called partition stitching, which allows devices to adjust the partition dynamically. Microsoft has finished testing this new version of the technical preview on a wide variety of Windows handsets.
The preview is available through Microsoft’s Windows Insiders program. Some of the handsets now able to install the beta operating system include the Lumia 1520, 1320, 1020, 920, 925, 928, and a smattering of handsets from the Lumia 500, 600, 700, and 800 series.
According to Microsoft today’s build includes an early version of the Project Spartan browser, the new Windows 10 universal Outlook and calendar apps, and new phone and messaging apps.
The People Hub has a new visual design, and the Maps app has been updated to the universal windows version. Microsoft also refreshed the app switcher tool, which now supports a new grid for faster selecting.
Microsoft said it fixed a number of performance problems compared to earlier builds, but warned that there are still a number of known problems with the technical preview.
