Microsoft has filed a suit against Samsung seeking to collect $6.9 million in interest.
According to Microsoft, Samsung delayed payment of $1 billion in smartphone patent royalties owed Microsoft. When it did finally pay, the company omitted the accrued interest. Samsung believes Microsoft violated a 2011 patent-licensing agreement the two companies struck when Microsoft agreed to purchase Nokia’s handset business in 2013.
Microsoft’s new legal filing asks a judge declare it didn’t violate the 2011 agreement and demands Samsung pay the interest on the late patent royalties. Most makers of Android smartphones pay Microsoft patent fees due to several Microsoft technologies contained in Android devices.
Motorola is the only company not paying patent fees to Microsoft, and the two companies are still embroiled in legal proceedings.
