Warner Bros. Pictures and Mojang have today announced that they have officially set their Minecraft movie release date. Look for the big screen adaptation of the hit video game to arrive Friday, May 24, 2019. That’s the same date that the studio had set aside for their Jason Segel helmed LEGO adventure, The Billion Brick Race. Expect a new date for that film to be announced shortly.
“Hello future Minecraft movie-goers!” Mojang COO Vu Bui writes in the official Minecraft release date announcement. “I know you’ve been thinking just about every day, ‘When’s the Minecraft movie coming out?’ Luckily for you, we can finally say! The Minecraft movie will be released on May 24, 2019! The film will also be released in 3D & IMAX. Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right? That’s it for now, but as time goes on we’ll share loads more. Loads!”
Minecraft, which has passed 100 million registered users, is officially described as follows:
Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.
It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. Its pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea.
Roy Lee and Jill Messick are attached to produce the Minecraft movie, which has It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator, writer and star Rob McElhenney attached to direct.
