Liosngate’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ will cross the $300 million milestone in U.S. grosses over the Christmas weekend, joining Marvel-Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” as a bright spot in what’s been a disappointing 2014 at the box office.
“Mockingjay” finished in ninth place on Christmas Day with $2.69 million at 2,793 theaters, giving it $296.7 million in five weeks. The third iteration in the Jennifer Lawrence franchise has also generated $350 million in international grosses, with China not launching until next year.
“Guardians” finished its domestic run at $332 million.
“Mockingjay” won’t match the $424 million U.S. total for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” but could approach the $440 million international total if it performs well in the booming Chinese market.
The franchise finale, “Mockingjay – Part 2,” will open Nov. 20.
