A Motorola spokesperson has quashed expectations that the Droid 2 Global was to receive an update from Android 2.2 (Froyo) to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). After indicating through its user forums that an update to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) was imminent, a subsequent post has killed off any hope that an update would arrive soon, or even at all. The spokesperson said that the update was not rolling out, and could give no indication when any update might arrive.
Owners of Android devices have often found the experience getting updates to the latest version of the operating system frustrating. The delays are often caused by the skinning of the OS by handset manufacturers with their customized interfaces and apps, or by telcos slow to assist in initiating over-the-air updates, or blocking features baked into the OS.
This has resulted in the fragmentation of the Android platform, with users running many different versions of the OS. Google recently admitted this problem plaguing its platform and has teamed with handset vendors in attempt to roll out OS updates more frequently and faster than in the past.
