Navigon will soon release an all-new version of its navigation apps for iPhone and Android that now feature user-selected download of the specific regions users want, keeping downloads faster and avoiding wasted storage space. The leaner, lighter maps also load faster and zoom in quicker, and can be optionally or automatically updated every quarter. The company also plans to expand to the Windows Phone 7 platform later this year.
The app’s new MyMaps function offers users map regions they can download, with the option of downloading other portions at a later time. The app versions have been customized to each platform; iPhone uses get animated menus, multi-touch gestures and a 3D mode, while Android users get Zagat ratings and reviews, live speed camera warnings and real-time driving data.
The program continues to offer spoken turn-by-turn directions, visual lane guidance, live traffic information and re-routing and other standard GPS features. The company plans to bring a version of the app to Windows 7 in the near future, adding features such as the Reality Scanner (an “augmented reality” view to identify businesses and landmarks), phonebook integration and ability to add an address as a shortcut on the home screen.
Pricing has not yet been announced, but currently the North American version of Navigon’s Mobile Navigator sells for $60. Current users will upgrade to the new version for free.
