Netflix has confirmed that it was expanding beyond North America into Latin America and the Caribbean by the end of 2011. Now it appears that the streaming online movie and rent-by-mail service may be targeting Europe as well. Variety claims through sources that Netflix will establish a beachhead in Spain and the UK early next year.
Netflix had tried unsuccessfully to enter Europe via the UK back in 2004. Since then, it had focused on operations in the US until last September, when it tackled the Canadian market. Bolstered by its success in Canada, the company announced that it was going to expand services to Mexico and 42 countries south of the border.
This week, Netflix raised prices for its subscribers that wanted to both receive DVDs by mail and stream content. Some analysts saw this as a way to generate additional funds in anticipation of attacking the European marketplace.
