Netflix has started up an $8 DVD-only plan to help appease its legacy service users. New users can sign-up for an account and begin a free month long trial, after which they will be billed monthly for $8 until they cancel. Although the Netflix service originally started as DVD-only, it has shifted its emphasis heavily towards an online streaming model which is the preferred model of numerous online movie services.
Before the addition of the new plan, users were restricted to choosing from a $10 per month plan that offered unlimited streaming and one DVD out at a time, or a $5 per month plan that offered just two DVDs per cycle. Although it has been a successful approach that saw Netflix subscriber base grow 69 in the past twelve months, it was thought that the company was missing an important part of the market that isn’t ready, or is unable, to make the switch to a streaming model.
Netflix has also developed a new web portal for customers to access the service, bringing back some features that had progressively been stripped from its site including reemphasizing its DVD library as well as bringing back the DVD-queue functionality on connected devices
