CBS Studios announced at Comic-Con that the new Star Trek television series will be titled Star Trek Discovery! Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, American Gods) will serve as showrunner on what will be the franchise’s first show since Star Trek Enterprise concluded its four season run in 2005. See the new ship in the Star Trek Discovery trailer below!
The all-new Star Trek will begin production in Toronto in September for its January 2017 premiere. The iconic and influential global franchise will return to television for the first time since 2005 with a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation.
“One of the things that is exciting for me is that we are telling a ‘Star Trek’ story in a modern way,” Fuller previously told Moviefone. “We’re telling a 13-chapter story in this first season. It’s nice to be able to dig deep into things that would have been breezed passed if we were doing episodic and had to contain a story to an episode. We are going to be continuing [Star Trek’s] tradition of progressive casting and progressive character work to be an inclusive world. That’s the most promising thing that ‘Star Trek’ offers, is a vision of the future where we do all get along.”
Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller are co-creators and executive producers for the new Star Trek series, based on Gene Roddenberry’s original series. Fuller launched his career writing for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Kurtzman is co-writer and producer of 2009’s Star Trek and its follow-up Star Trek Into Darkness.
The series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, Fuller’s Living Dead Guy Productions and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers.
David Semel (“The Man in the High Castle,” “The Strain”) is set to direct the opening episode of Star Trek Discovery, which will debut on CBS in January 2017 before the show makes its permanent home on the streaming service CBS All Access.
