Five years after its release, the Nintendo 3DS has broken the 60m sales milestone, according to Nintendo. The 3DS’ sales hasn’t quite lived up to the Game Boy Advance’s (80m) or the DS (154m). However, it has easily outperformed the PS Vita, which Sony stopped releasing sales estimates for.
While sales are starting to tail off, Nintendo plans to continue supporting the device into next year with the release of Pokémon Sun and Moon. Despite this support, Nintendo is looking into alternative platforms; it released its first mobile game this year, and plans to release new Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing titles on Android and iOS later this year.
Nintendo is yet to announce a new handheld console, meaning the Nintendo 3DS could be around for some time yet.
