NVIDIA has revealed some brand-new architecture details behind its next-gen quad-core Tegra chip, Project Kal-El.
There are two whitepapers: The Benefits of Quad Core CPUs in Mobile Devices and Variable SMP – A Multi-Core CPU Architecture for Low Power and High Performance . (Both are PDFs and please know they may be a little much for the non-geek)
The papers talk about how consumers will get better battery life and higher performance per watt from a quad-core chip like Kal-El, compared to today’s leading dual-core chips. All these benefits are due to a new Kal-El technology – variable symmetric multi-processing (vSMP) – that introduces a new patented 5th “Companion” Core for low power operation. This new low-power companion core is used for web reading, music and video.
All should lead to some great tablets and phones soon.
