Panasonic has introduced a bridge camera that is capable of recording 4K video, as well as standard photographs. The Lumix FZ1000 uses a one-inch High Sensitivity MOS sensor that can capture QFHD content, with the 20.1-megapixel sensor also capable of producing 8-megapixel photographs from the 4K video feed while the footage is being recorded.
Combined with a redesigned Venus Engine, the FZ1000 is being touted as an option for amateur filmmakers. While it can record video at a 4K resolution at 30fps, switching to 1080p bumps the speed up to 60fps, and also brings a five-axis optical image stabilization into play for a steadier shot. Extra recording modes are also offered, with the ability to push 1080p to 120fps in some instances.
The included 16x Leica DC Vario-Elmarit zoom lens gives a 35mm equivalent of 25mm to 400mm, offering an aperture range of f/2.8-4, with aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements used in its construction to lessen chromatic aberration and distortion. The autofocus system uses a linear AF motor and Panasonic’s Lumix Depth from Defocus technology, which is said to provide rapid focusing of a subject, while the ISO range stretches to 25,600, and while the full-resolution burst mode can take shots at 12fps, lowering the resolution provides a 50fps burst mode instead.
On the back of the camera is a 2,359k-dot OLED electronic viewfinder partnered with a free-angle 3-inch 921k-dot display, accompanied by remote control options using a mobile app and the FZ1000’s NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity. A pop-up flash and hotshoe are also included.
Panasonic is shipping the Lumix FZ1000 in July for $900.
