PayPal today unveiled a new way to make in-store payments with mobile devices.

Its latest idea involves the PayPal mobile app, which can be used to display a QR code that is then scanned by retailers. According to PayPal, most retailers could make their systems compatible with this new payment app with a simple software download to their registers. PayPal has successfully trialled this new mobile payment method in Australia. It expects to launch at a limited number of retailers this year, with more to follow next year. PayPal recently introduced a product called Beacon, which can be used by small retailers to accept mobile payments in their stores through Bluetooth.

The company, which is owned by eBay, has been pushing aggressively into the physical world with its payment services.
