The Producers Guild of America announced its annual nominees for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, once again selecting ten movies and their production teams from the long list of quality films released in 2013, as well as announcing their nominations for television and animated feature films.
The winners will be announced on January 19 at the PGA’s 25th Annual awards show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel after being voted on by the guild’s 6,000 members.
There weren’t too many surprises as the usual 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Gravity and others were in the mix. The most notable omission may have been the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, which had received much critical acclaim ever since it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. Also noticeably absent was the adaptation of Tracy Letts’ play August: Osage County, which received a SAG Ensemble nomination. Instead, the PGA went with Spike Jonze’s Her and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, confirming their backing for potential Best Picture nominations at the Oscars.
The animated feature love with the nominees for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures was fairly spread out among the five main animation houses with DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods, Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me 2, 20th Century Fox/Blue Sky Films’ Epic, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen and Disney•Pixar’s Monsters University all receiving nominations.
AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” PBS’ “Downtown Abbey,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Showtime’s “Homeland” and the Netflix series “House of Cards” each received nominations in the episodic drama television category, the Norman Felton Award. NBC’s “30 Rock,” Netflix’s “Arrested Development,” CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory,” ABC’s “Modern Family” and HBO’s “VEEP” were nominated in the corresponding Danny Thomas Award for episodic comedy television. Again, the comedy nominees seemed to be spread between the major networks, HBO and the fledgling Netflix internet channel.
