Qualcomm Debuts Snapdragon SDK for Virtual Reality

Qualcomm LogoQualcomm today announced a new software developer kit meant to help app writers create better virtual reality experiences for phones that are powered by Snapdragon processors.

The SDK will school developers so their apps can handle the “extreme power consumption constraints and challenging performance requirements … in order for VR applications to become truly immersive.

The Snapdragon VR SDK includes DSP sensor fusion, which relies on gyroscope and accelerometer data to determine and predict head positioning. The SDK can reduce VR app latency by 50% through the use of the fast motion to photon tool.

Stereoscopic rendering with lens correction improves the visual quality of graphics and video, while VR layering helps clear up menus and text as they float within virtual worlds. Last, developers will be able to fine tune how the CPU, GPU, and DSP work together to manage power and heat while achieving stable frame rates.

The SDK is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2016.
