Rockstar Games is bringing a port of the original Max Payne to iOS and Android devices, reports say. Retitled Max Payne Mobile, the port should nevertheless carry over most of the features of Remedy’s PC game, adding some Social Club functions and a revised, customizable interface built for touchscreens. The release is meant to precede Max Payne 3, which will ship for PCs and consoles in May.
Players assume the role of Payne, a NYPD detective whose wife and daughter are murdered in what turns out to be part of larger conspiracy. The game is heavily inspired by crime novels, film noir, and action movies like Hard Boiled and The Matrix; players fight off mobsters and other enemies using an arsenal of guns. The game’s signature element is its use of bullet time, which can slow down the action in heavy firefights. Players can also perform leaps and dives to avoid incoming shots.
The iOS version of Max Payne is due on April 12th, and will require at least an iPhone 3GS, fourth-gen iPod touch, or first-gen iPad. The Android edition scheduled for April 26th, but requirements haven’t been posted yet. In both cases pricing is also unknown.
