Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) is set to star alongside Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, Mad Max: Fury Road) in The Discovery, a science fiction love story set in a world where the existence of the afterlife is scientifically proven. The film will be directed by Charlie McDowell (The One I Love).
With The Discovery, McDowell reteams with The One I Love‘s Justin Lader. They co-wrote The Discovery‘s script, which is set a year after the world changing discovery of a provable afterlife. Hoult plays the son of the man responsible for the discovery and Mara plays a woman he falls in love with whose life is tinged by a tragic past.
Endgame Entertainment and Protagonist Pictures are co-financing The Discovery, and Protagonist will introduce it to buyers at the AFM. ICM Partners is handling domestic rights. Alex Orlovsky of Verisimilitude is producing the film alongside James D Stern of Endgame Entertainment.
McDowell’s The One I Love was released in theaters in 2014. It stars Mark Duplass (“The League,” Safety Not Guaranteed) and Elisabeth Olsen (“Mad Men,” High-Rise) as a married couple who, after experiencing a rift in their relationship, head for a weekend getaway to try and reconnect. From there, the story takes a few surprising turns. If you’d like to check it out yourself, The One I Love is now streaming on Netflix.
The Discovery is scheduled to begin production in Rhode Island in January 2016.
