According to TheWrap, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes will take on the taboo-pushing thriller The Voyeur’s Motel, his first directorial effort after two back-to-back blockbuster James bond films (Skyfall, SPECTRE).
DreamWorks Pictures acquired the rights to The New Yorker article The Voyeur’s Motel by noted author Gay Talese after winning an intense bidding war.
The non-fiction story centers around Gerald Foos, a man who bought a 21-room motel in Denver and — with the help of his wife — installed a system through ceiling vents that allowed him to watch his guests having sex. At one point, through his voyeurism, he witnessed a murder. Foos anonymously contacted Talese in 1980, and only recently gave the author permission to tell his story publicly in the April 11 issue.
The Voyeur’s Motel will mark a kind of homecoming of sorts for Mendes, who has directed three films in the past for DreamWorks (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road).
