Samsung is planning to offset its falling smartphone sales from the last quarter’s results by redoubling its efforts in OLED screen production. The South Korean electronics giant’s display arm is planning to make an investment of 4 trillion won ($3.6 billion) into OLED production, in the hope that its component sales to other manufacturers will go up in the next few years.
A spokesperson for Samsung Display told Reuters the new production line will be manufacturing small and medium-sized OLED panels, destined for use in smartphones, tablets, and other small devices. The investment itself will be made over the next three years, though few other details about its plans were provided to the report.
Samsung is not the only one interested in OLED production. According to the Yonhap News Agency, LG will be spending 1 trillion won ($915 million) on its TV-sized OLED panel production line this year, due to increased demand. LG Display has previously spent 800 billion won ($726 million) on the project.
Samsung is also expected to start construction on a 15.6 trillion won ($14.1 billion) processor plant in South Korea, with construction set to begin in the first half of this year with a view to completion by late 2017.
