Seagate is now shipping the fastest eco-friendly hard drive available with the Barracuda Green. Formerly known as the Barracuda LP, the drive turns at 5,900RPM versus the 5,200RPM or 5,400RPM that other power consumption drives do. The 3.5-inch unit is simultaneously environmentally friendly in its actual materials, as it has low use of halogen and is up to 70 percent recyclable.
The drive comes in a new 1TB capacity as well as the originally promised 1.5TB and 2TB, but uses the newer 4K sector formatting in all cases to make better use of the potential space and reduce the need for defragmentation. It should plug into any SATA-equipped desktop and tops out at SATA II’s 3Gbps speeds.
