The Los Angeles Media Fund and the Los Angeles Lakers will join with Haven Entertainment to produce a five-episode documentary series focusing on the 1980s era of the famed basketball team.
That period, dubbed ‘Showtime’,’ was a time when the team boasted its signature run-and-gun style which blended Magic Johnson’s passing, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring and shot blocking, and the likes of Jamaal Wilkes, James Worthy, Byron Scott, and Michael Cooper backing them up.
At the same time, owner Jerry Buss turned the games into more of an entertainment – bringing on dancers and a live band for home games. Pat Riley coached the team through four of their five championships in that era which also saw major celebrities turning up to their games along with a major rivalry with Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics.
Kristopher Belman (More Than A Game) will helm the project. Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman are producing.
