Showtime has nabbed the drama series Guantanamo. Oliver Stone is set to direct the two-hour premiere episode for the project from Weinstein Television, marking the Oscar-winning director’s first move into scripted television.
The network is still developing the series and will wait until the scripts are done before giving it the green light.
“Guantanamo” will tell the stories of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp through the perspectives of prisoners, soldiers, lawyers and journalists. The real-life prison was opened in 2002 amid the war on terror and has been a hotbed for debate over whether it should remain open.
Daniel Voll is the creator and showrunner, while Alexandra Milchen will executive produce. The Weinstein Company’s Harvey Weinstein and David Glasser are also onboard as executive producers.
