Sonos has added to its Play range of wireless home speakers, which currently consists of the Play:3 and the Play:5, with the Play:1. At the same time as launching the compact speaker, one that briefly appeared on sale late last week, Sonos has released a software update that adds some minor changes to the way the speakers function.
Housing two Class D amplifiers, a 3.5-inch mid-woofer and a tweeter, the Play:1 works just like others in the range. Wirelessly connecting to an existing Sonos network or via a bridge, or alternatively over Ethernet, the Play:1 is able to play music and audio from a personal library or from streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify, all controlled by an iOS or Android app. Two Play:1 speakers can be paired together to provide stereo audio via the app, or it could be combined with others from the range, the Sonos Playbar, or the Sonos Sub to create a 5.1-channel home theater or to form part of a multiroom system.
The Sonos Play:1 is available to buy today in the United States for $199, along with a limited-time offer of a free wireless Bridge worth $49, while shipping for the rest of the world will start on October 29th.
The latest software update allows the mute button to play and pause music for a room when pressed, with a double press skipping to the next track. Users that have access to multiple systems will be able to add each Sonos system to their app, which will now automatically connect to each system.
