Sony today unveiled a prototype flexible monochromatic e-paper display at is annual Japanese dealer convention. Typically, e-paper uses a glass substrate, but Sony has developed a plastic substrate to give the display the ability to bend. Sony also demonstrated how the new e-paper is resistant to breaks when dropped and how the display can be rolled. An added advantage of the plastic substrate is its comparative lightness, which opens up the possibility for wider applications in devices such as future Sony e-readers.
At today’s demonstration, Sony did not provide any further details about if, and when, it would bring the technique to market.
