Sony has put its 4K Ultra HD Media Player on sale in the United States. The previously-announced media server will provide 4K-resolution movies and other content to owners of Sony Ultra HD televisions, along with some details about its incoming online media service for rentals of more high-resolution video releases.
The player is supplied with 10 pre-loaded feature films, which appears to be a mix of classic titles and big-name modern releases, including Taxi Driver, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and Salt. A number of shorter videos are also included, featuring indie films, shorts, and 4K gallery videos. Inside is a 2-terabyte hard drive, while on the back it has gigabit Ethernet, two HDMI-out ports, a USB 3.0 port and SD card slot on the front, and an extra USB 2.0 port on the back, meant for an extra external drive.
Later this summer, Sony will be launching its Video Unlimited 4K Ultra HD service, which will offer TV shows, movies, and shorts to download. Purchasing 4K movies will start from $30, while 24-hour rentals of the same titles will cost at least $8 each.
The Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player costs $700.
