Sprint has revealed more details about the process of decommissioning its iDEN network. The company announced that it has selected a number of vendors nationwide that will perform the actual work of removing Sprint’s equipment from its base station and cell tower locations for re-use or recycling.

Additionally, Sprint said that it plans to decommission 9,600 iDEN cell towers before the end of the third quarter, reducing the availability of iDEN services to its current customers.

Sprint recently ceased offering iDEN handsets and is pushing customers who require push-to-talk services to transition to its new CDMA-based PTT DirectConnect service. Sprint said that its iDEN network will be fully decommissioned “as early as” June 30, 2013.
