Sprint and T-Mobile have waived the fees they normally charge to send SMS short code messages for customers who use them to make donations to charities helping out in Japan. Sprint made the announcement on Friday, while T-Mobile just did the same today. The move is not as bold as the free calls and texts to Japan from AT&T and Verizon.

Sprint will not charge fees for users who text REDCROSS to 90999 and The American Red Cross, TSUNAMI to 50555 and Convoy of Hope, WAVE to 50555 and the World Relief Corp. of National Association of Evangelicals and JAPAN or QUAKE to 80888 and The Salvation Army. Each text donates $10 to the respective organization. How long the fee elimination will last was disclosed.
