In the latest round of Iwata Asks for Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata sits down with famed game producer Shigeru Miyamoto and three other members of the team that worked on Super Mario 3D World to ask about development of the game. The whole interview is an interesting read and you can do that here, but one interesting thing that stuck out is that Miyamoto wants fans to know that just because the team took time to work on Super Mario 3D World, that doesn’t mean they won’t revisit the Super Mario Galaxy world.
Miyamoto: Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that this doesn’t mean we’ll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game.
In fact, Yoshiaki Koizumi goes on to further elaborate on Miyamoto’s point, stating that Super Mario 3D World was a concept the team wanted to bring to the Wii U after the development of Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS. The progression from 3D Land to 3D World for the Wii U was a natural one.
Miyamoto: The same team can’t make both at the same time. And we can’t bring in a second party and slap the name Super Mario Galaxy on it. I suppose we could idealistically make both in Tokyo, but we want to do something new too, so there was that dilemma.
