An upcoming update to the cult retro-gaming hit Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is scheduled to arrive “before April 21st” and will update the popular iPad game to be universal and compatible with smaller iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPod Touch. A separate “tinier touchtronic” version of game only for iPhone and iPod Touch will also be available at the same time, sporting a $3 price tag compared to the universal version, which will remain priced at $5. The developers explain that the separate version is for customers who do not ever plan to get an iPad.
The game is billed as a collaboration between Superbrothers and Capy, two Toronto-based studios, along with composer Jim Guthrie. It may at times seem barely qualified as a “game” in the usual sense modern players expect; more like a long walk with occasional events (including, per the title, bits of swordplay and “sworcery”) that build slowly as the game goes on, but it is strangely engrossing nonetheless. Players wander through a beautifully illustrated but retro-styled 8-bit natural environment and solve “musical mysteries” as a wandering warrior monk.

The game features built-in Twitter integration, which can be used to create a running commentary on the experience or to simply “broadcast” the things the game itself has to say. The soundtrack, which plays a major role in the adventure, features an album’s worth of material from Guthrie, and (taking a page from the Myst playbook) is available separately on iTunes, Bandcamp and on vinyl.
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is an iOS-exclusive game with no plans to move to other platforms.
