Four new movies hit the box office this weekend and the movie about an overpopulated Earthtook the top spot.
“Elysium,” starring Matt Damon, edged out competition for the No. 1 spot with $30.5 million. Three other new movies followed in the next three spots, with “We’re the Millers“ opening strong in second place, “Planes” even as itnoised dived with critics, took third place and “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” sailed into fourth.
“Elysium” was director Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to “District 9,” which received an Academy Award nomination for best picture. The flick was inanced by Sony’s TriStar Pictures and Media Rights Capital, is about a futuristic world in which a majority of humans live on a ruined Earth while the privileged live in a utopian space habitat called Elysium. About $4.9 million of the movie’s domestic gross came from IMAX showings.
