Todd Phillips has share a new photo from his Joker movie on Instagram, while confirming the film’s rating.
The film is a standalone movie, a $55 million budgeted dark and subversive standalone story not seen before on the big screen. In the story, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is a man disregarded by society who eventually snaps – with the film both a gritty character study and a broader cautionary tale.
As a result, it doesn’t have a need to appeal to a wide audience and so is going for a darker and more interesting angle. Phillips says of the movie’s rating:
“It will be Rated R. I’ve been asked this a lot. Just assumed people knew. Sorry.”
Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham co-star while Phillips helms from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver.2
Joker opens in cinemas on October 4th.
