Twitch Moves to Shut Down Non-Gaming Streams

Twitch screenVideo streaming service Twitch is cracking down on broadcasts unrelated to video games after reports surfaced of people using its PlayStation 4 app to stream racy content.

Over the weekend, Kotaku reported some PS4 owners appear to be using Twitch in conjunction with the console’s Playroom app to broadcast activities from their locations. Playroom is a built-in virtual reality app that combines use of the console’s PlayStation Camera, sold separately.

The worries over Twitch’s use were prompted by reports that some users had broadcast inappropriate content such as nudity. Twitch says content unrelated to video games is not allowed. “If using PS4 Playroom, the content must be about games or gaming and within our (terms of service),” says a statement from the Twitch Support Twitter account.

Despite the concerns, Twitch has elevated its profile as a video game streaming service with its debut on the PlayStation 4. Players can hit a Share button to immediately stream video of their gameplay to viewers. A similar streaming option will be available on Xbox One next spring.
