With time running down before the permanent shutdown of Twitpic, the company has announced that it has agreed to be taken over by Twitter itself.
The arrangement keeps the domain and photo archive accumulated by the service intact, and this keeps “the photos and links alive for the time being” according to a blog post announcing the deal.
The service is not going to be moving forward however, as the service is still shutting down ultimately, and in “read-only mode” for now.
