new-twitter-logoTwitter’s latest iOS update now includes iPad-compatible keyboard shortcuts. Users with paired Bluetooth keyboards or Smart Keyboards will now be able to use their keyboards to create new tweets, or move between tabs.

The update sported the typically sparse release notes, with no notice of the keyboard shortcuts being added. Thanks to a tweet by an iOS engineer at Twitter, however, the keyboard shortcut compatibility was brought to light. Holding down the command key on the keyboard on devices running iOS 9 or higher shows a small dialog indicating which keyboard shortcuts are available to use.

The dialog that displays in-app doesn’t appear to show all available commands

  • CMD + N starts a new tweet
  • CMD + W closes the new tweet dialog.
  • CMD + [1 – 5] allows users to cycle through the different views within the Twitter app: Home, Notifications, Moments, Messages, and Me.alternatively users can also use
CMD + [ or ] to cycle to the previous or next view

The new compatibility may have been added in during Twitter’s Hack Week. Hack Week is a time of year when Twitter employees are encouraged to spend a week working on ideas to improve the Twitter experience.

The update is available for free from the App Store and is compatible with iPhones and iPads. The new iOS keyboard shortcut support is compatible with iPads running iOS 9 or higher.
