Twitter today rolled out a new feature that will allow users of its mobile apps to mute the accounts of others without unfollowing them.
According to Twitter, users can remove the tweets and retweets of others from their timeline, as well as nix any push or SMS notifications associated with that particular account. The muted user will still be able to see, retweet, and respond to the tweets of the person who muted them, but those responses won’t be visible to the person who muted them. Further, the person who has been muted won’t know that they’ve been muted. People can unmute users at any time. Twitter believes the tool can be useful for people who may want to temporarily silence select accounts rather than force people to unfollow/re-follow those accounts.
The muting feature is being rolled out slowly to the Android and iOS app, as well as Twitter.com.
