An upcoming version of the Unreal Development Kit will allow developers to generate iOS games, per Epic Games VP Mark Rein in a Joystick Interview. The Unreal engine underlies a number of high-profile computer and console games, such as Gears of War, Bioshock and Batman: Arkham Asylum.
The move should see the technology seen in Epic’s Citadel demo spread to third-party games. The engine is significantly more advanced than the ones used in most iOS apps, and could help bring more non-casual games to iOS.
Rein is meanwhile denying any suggestions that Epic has early access to iOS 4.2. An recent update to Citadel mentioned fixed performance on iPads with iOS 4, even though compatible firmware should not yet be ready to test. “No we don’t have unreleased iPad iOS 4,” says Rein. “We fixed an anticipated problem based on experience with 4th gen iPod touch.”
