10 months after launching the service in Israel, Google-owned mapping service Waze is expanding its carpooling service to San Francisco to help solve the city’s traffic problems. The service, which is called RideWith in Israel, is simply called Waze Carpool here in the United States and is open to a select number of employers and their commuters in San Francisco.
Waze Carpool is different from how most people think of Lyft or Uber in that it really is simply a carpool service. Users can’t apply to be drivers and the driver isn’t paid except for gas. Waze works to match people going to the same destination. People interested in using the service fill out information about their commute and send a request detailing specific times and routes. Waze then suggests a fee based on gas that the driver should receive.
In fact, Waze in the past has generally made a point to go out of its way to differentiate Carpool from Lyft and Uber. With Waze Carpool, drivers are limited to two rides per day and limited to heavy traffic times, such as the morning and evening commutes.
