Western Digital has introduced a pair of thin portable external storage drives in metal enclosures, following on from the My Passport Ultra which launched in May. The new My Passport Slim drives come in 1TB and 2TB capacities, measuring 0.48-inches and 0.7-inches thick respectively, and are supplied with WD SmartWare Pro data protection software for added security.
Connecting over USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, the My Passport Slim’s software automatically backs up data in the background, and also provides the option of backing up data to Dropbox as an off-site backup. The connection to Dropbox works both ways, with the drive also able to back up the cloud storage account itself.
WD is selling the My Passport Slim 1TB for $100, while the $150 2TB version will be available sometime in the next quarter.
