Hyper Light Drifter, which was successfully funded through Kickstarter and greenlit on Steam back in 2013, is now available for pre-order on GOG.com. Unfortunately for those who helped the team smash the Wii U stretch goal, that version is now “in limbo.”
According to an update on the game’s Kickstarter page, “internal contractual issues” between the platform holder and engine developer are stalling the port.
“We had information about our engine, two years back, when we announced support for the platform,” said Heart Machine. “This had assured us we could port to the Wii U with relatively little hassle by now.
“However, due to ongoing internal contractual issues beyond our control between the platform holder and engine developer, we just don’t know when or if this situation will have a good resolution.
“We are looking into the options available and doing what we can to help push the issue.”
The developer said it will still offer the Wii U option in the Surveys sent out to backers; however, if Wii U is chosen as the preferred platform, and the team is “unable to support it this year,” a key on another platform of the backer’s choice will be offered.
“We would rather keep this option open, knowing there’s still a possibility for it to work, than cancel the port right now,” the post continued. “Please understand business can sometimes get in the way of production.
“There’s only so much we can do to help sway these types of events with larger entities. We’ll keep everyone updated as soon as we know more.”
At present, Hyper Light Drifter is slated for a Q2 release, with more details on a release date coming in March. Hyper Light Drifter will be released on Linux, Mac, PC, PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and hopefully Wii U.
