Comcast sis launching Xfinity TV, a free app for the iPad and iPhone. The app currently serves as a remote control and lets users steer live TV, on demand videos and the DVR to either change stations or schedule recordings for later. Unlike some options, it doesn’t need Wi-Fi and will work on 3G as long as the owner has a Comcast ID or e-mail sign-in.
The app is universal and works with “compatible” Comcast set-top boxes, though the cable provider hasn’t said what those might be.
An update in 2011 should give Xfinity TV the option of streaming the videos themselves as a plus for cable use. Android users will get their equivalent of the remote control app before the end of 2010, with a BlackBerry app coming sometime afterwards.
