Microsoft and Xiaomi have forged a partnership concerning mobile apps and patents that should benefit both parties.
Xiaomi has agreed to install Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Skype on a collection of its Android-powered smartphones and tablets in China, India, and other regions.
Xiaomi is targeting September to install the apps on devices including the Mi 5, Mi Max, Mi 4s, Redmi Note 3, and Redmi 3. The deal also includes a cross-license and patent transfer agreement that will see Xiaomi gain some 1,500 patents from Microsoft.
Microsoft benefits by exposing its apps and services to Chinese, Indian, and other consumers.
The companies say the agreement marks the beginning of a long-term relationship between the two.
