Aquaman actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in talks to star as the titular monster of MGM and Universal Pictures’ new take on the Candyman horror franchise.
The new film is being dubbed a ‘spiritual sequel’ to the original 1992 film and returns to the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
That original starred Virginia Madsen as a graduate student who explores the legend of Candyman while writing a thesis on urban legends.
Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) is slated to helm while Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld are producing via Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. Shooting aims to begin in the Spring ahead of a June 12th 2020 release.
