Zynga is planning to close its subsidiary OMGPOP’s online game portal starting August 29, when four of its web games will be shut off, with the site going entirely dark a month later on September 30. Mobile apps made by the company will not be affected, meaning players of Draw Something, Draw Something 2 and Draw My Thing will continue to be able to play on mobile devices. The four games first affected will be Cupcake Corner, Gem Rush, Pool World Champ and Snoops.
Zynga has found itself in a world of difficulties, including a shareholder lawsuit over possible insider trading, a serious drop in Facebook gaming as players moved to mobile, and general mismanagement under former CEO Mark Pincus, who recently hired former Microsoft Xbox head Don Mattrick to displace him as CEO. The company has shed more than 600 employees and closed three offices this year alone. In the letter to OMGPOP players, the company invites them to try other games made by Zynga.
