Users of the fourth-generation Apple TV will find it easier to discover new apps for the tvOS set-top box, after Apple added several new app categories to the Apple TV App Store. The second update that is useful to end users released this week, a total of 12 new categories have been added to the store, with the expansion mostly concerning app categories not typically associated with streaming media to the Apple TV or set-top boxes in general.
Aside from more generalized categories titled “Utilities” and “Catalogs,” the rest of the new batch covers apps for business, weather, travel, social networking, reference, productivity, finance, books, music, and medical apps. These new app subjects are rolling out to the Apple TV slowly, with some users seeing them immediately while others will have to wait until the changes reach their device.
Earlier Apple added the option to see a list of compatible apps previously purchased by the user, but have not yet been downloaded to the Apple TV. Apple also released new resources to developers, with the Apple TV Tech Talks on the developer portal consisting of 11 videos discussing the design and development of tvOS apps.
